Our back bone is a complex structure of muscles, ligaments,
tendons, bones and disks. Our spine is resting against a cushion like pads
called Cartilage. Problems with any of these are likely to result in back pain.
Strain
Straining your muscles, ligaments can also lead to back
pain. The strain can happen due to improper lifting of weight, trying to lift
something too heavy to be handled by your body or the strain could happen due
to an abrupt or awkward movement that can shock your backbone structure.
Structural Problems
Back pain can also result due to structural problems for
some. The problems can be among one of many of the following:
Damaged / Bulged
Disks – Our spine is composed of vertebrates. And disks offer cushioning to
each vertebra. If there is any damage or rupture to the disk, the pressure will
be more on the nerve directly, which will result in back pain. Same is the case
with bulged disks.
Sciatica – This
is an unbearable, sharp and shooting pain that starts at buttock and move
through the back of the leg. It is the result of a bulging or herniated disk
that presses the nerve during movement.
Other common causes of back pain being Arthritis, which
results due to the problems in membranes in the joint of hips, lower back,
knees and hands.
In rare cases, when the spine curvature is abnormal, the
individual is more likely to experience back pain. Such a condition is called
Scoliosis.
The process
of diagnosing back pain
In most cases, physicians will be able to diagnose back pain
through physical examination and from the narration of patients. Scanning may
not be required in all cases. If the pain persists for too long, then the
doctors may go for the following tests
Xrays, CT or MRI to identify to extent of damage
done to the soft tissues in the patient’s back
Bone scan – to detect tumors in the bone or
compression fractures caused by brittle bones (osteoporosis). The scanning is
done by injecting a radioactive substance and it detects the condition of the
bone effectively.
Electromyography – This study is used to
understand the nerve compression which may be due to bulging disks or herniated
disk.
Pulse Diagnosis – Authentic ayurvedic doctors read the
pulse of the patients and understand the extent of damage done to the patient
by reading the pulse and accurately identify the cause behind the back pain.
